2003 LLLI INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
POSTER SESSION ABSTRACTS
USING LOVING SUPPORT TO BUILD A BREASTFEEDING-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY: A NATIONAL TRAINING PROJECT IN 9 STATES

Cathy Carothers, BLA, IBCLC, 649 Cedar Springs Drive, Jackson, MS 39212; Linda Inglis, BS, IBCLC, 4809 E. Busch Blvd., Tampa, FL 33617; and Kendall Cox, BA, IBCLC, 832 Cedar, Greenville, MS 38701

The USDA WIC National Breastfeeding Promotion Project, Loving Support Makes Breastfeeding Work, is a highly successful national breastfeeding promotion program throughout the country, with large increases in breastfeeding rates in the States that have implemented the program in a comprehensive manner.

Building on the national success of Loving Support, USDA implemented a new phase to the project, "Using Loving Support to Build a Breastfeeding-Friendly Community," as a cooperative agreement with Best Start Social Marketing and the Mississippi State Department of Health. This training, technical assistance, and implementation project provided grant funding to 9 states to implement a comprehensive, community-based breastfeeding promotion program. States selected are: Alaska, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, Kentucky, and Michigan.

This poster session will showcase the national project, including details of the highly successful interactive training program provided by Best Start (which developed the original Loving Support program) and Mississippi (which conducted a comprehensive statewide campaign that resulted in dramatic breastfeeding rate increases).

Participants will also learn about the creative State projects that are being implemented in the 9 States, and the community partners who are working together to make it happen. Partners are a diverse group including La Leche League Leaders, local breastfeeding coalitions, private lactation consultants, physicians, nurses, WIC staff, worksite employers, childcare providers, and representatives from Early Head Start, Cooperative Extension, and other community programs.
