Chicago, IL (June, 2001)-Over
3,000 health care providers, lactation specialists, parents, babies and
children will fill the Hilton Chicago July 7-10, 2001 at the La Leche League
International Conference to hear world-renowned experts in the field of
breastfeeding and parenting including United States Surgeon General, David
Satcher, M.D. Dr. Satcher will speak on the importance of breastfeeding for
minority populations and the health benefits associated with breastfeeding.
Dr. Satcher initiated the US Health and Human Services Blueprint for Action
on Breastfeeding.
The Conference offers more than
one hundred sessions on parenting, breastfeeding, integrative health options
and personal development, including Marjorie Kostelnik, PhD, who will present
information on practical strategies for dealing with bullies and victims;
James Mc Kenna, PhD, world-renowned sleep researcher who will talk about
co-sleeping and the risk of SIDs; author Barbara Colorosa, who will discuss
parenting in times of chaos and loss; author and dance instructor Anne Green
Gilbert, who will demonstrate how movement affects brain development; Judith
Siegel, PhD, who will explore what children learn from their parents' marriage;
William J. Doherty, PhD, who will stress the importance of face-to-face family
time; Dr.William Sears, "America's Pediatrician," who will discuss
the long-term effects of attachment parenting, and Deborah Rowe, popular
Chicago radio personality, newscaster and author, who as the specially
featured banquet speaker will share her views on mothering and breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding experts include
Margaret Kyenkya-Isabirye, Senior Advisor UNICEF; Randa Saadeh, Technical
Advisor, the World Health Organization; Nils Bergman, MD, MPH, initiator of
skin-to-skin care for fragile infants in South Africa; Ted Greiner, PhD,
senior lecturer Uppsala University Sweden and breastfeeding specialist;
Chestin Berlin, MD, noted pediatric and toxicology specialist, who will speak
about medications in the breastfeeding mother; Kathleen Kendall Tacket, PhD,
who will talk about the impact of diet, exercise, and weight loss on human
milk composition and supply; Mayer Eisenstein, MD, author and host of a
nationally syndicated talk show whose subject will be intimacy and sexuality
during pregnancy and breastfeeding; Inga Spurlock, who will discuss promoting
breastfeeding among women of color; and Raj K. Anand, MD, Indian author who
will talk about creating a breastfeeding-friendly world.
The conference is the 17th such
venture for the 44 year old organization, founded by seven Chicago- area mothers who wanted to help others breastfeed. La Leche League
