Media Release: LLLI Offers Corporate Lactation Support to Help Companies Comply with New Illinois Law

Schaumburg, IL (October, 2001)-La Leche League International (LLLI), the world's foremost authority on breastfeeding, is pleased to introduce our Corporate Lactation Support program to companies seeking assistance in complying with Illinois' newly enacted Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Act. This new law requires employers with five or more employees, exclusive of the employer's parent, spouse, or child or other members of the employer's immediate family, to provide reasonable unpaid break time each day to an employee who needs to express breast milk for her infant child. The law also requires an employer to make reasonable efforts to provide a room or other location, in close proximity to the work area, other than a toilet stall, where the employee can express her milk in privacy.

LLLI helps meet the needs of companies' employees who are breastfeeding by providing accurate information with three distinct corporate packages specially developed for one or many locations and for any size company. Corporate lactation programs help promote a commitment to employee well being and save companies thousands of dollars per year in the process. A recent study of one company revealed that a corporate lactation program for employees generated a savings of $240,000 annually due to a decrease in health care expenses for mothers and their children. Reduced employee absenteeism among breastfeeding mothers was also shown to save $60,000 annually.
