Media Release: La Leche League International Publishes New Pamphlets

Schaumburg, IL (December, 2004). La Leche League International is pleased to announce the publication of two new pamphlets, "Breastfeeding a Baby with a Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate" and "Nipple Confusion: What's Real and What's Not?"

Science continues to teach us more about the thousands of unique components in human milk and the importance of the act of breastfeeding to mothers and babies. It follows that human milk and breastfeeding may be even more important when a baby is born with special needs.

Although babies with cleft defects need human milk as much or more than other babies, they also face unique breastfeeding challenges. The pamphlet "Breastfeeding a Baby with a Cleft Lip or Cleft Palate" explains these challenges and offers solutions, references, and additional resources.

The pamphlet "Nipple Confusion-What's Real and What's Not?" discusses the breastfeeding baby who has developed problems latching on. Whether the latch on problem results from nipple confusion or not, the good news is that babies are "hard-wired" to breastfeed and with good latch-on techniques and other strategies if needed, breastfeeding can almost always get back on track. This pamphlet offers these techniques and strategies so that mothers can overcome any difficulties and provide their babies with the benefits of human milk.
