World Health Day - Making Every Mother and Child Count
The World Health Organization (WHO) is making maternal and child health
the focus of World Health Day (WHD), April 7, with the theme "Making
Every Mother and Child Count." To celebrate this day, and to deliver
the LLLI message "Making Every Mother and Child Count - Through
Breastfeeding, One Baby at a Time," La Leche League International
has facilitated the production of a document currently available in
English,
French,
and Spanish,
and soon to be in Italian. The document relates many of
the ways in which breastfeeding is the cornerstone for life-long good
health for mothers and children.
This document will be posted on the LLLI website in PDF format and the LLLI office
will also send an official press release about this activity to major
media outlets. Leaders are encouraged to use this document and the "Local
Leader Press Release" that will be on the Leader Pages of the LLLI web site
to contact local media outlets in an effort to promote World Health Day,
breastfeeding and La Leche League.
The LLLI office would like to hear about the many ways in which you use
World Health Day and these materials to promote your local LLL group,
breastfeeding or LLLI. Please join the Marketing and Promotion discussion
group on the Community Network and let us know what you were able to do for
World Health Day.
The LLLI office has learned that an LLL Leader in France will be traveling
to Algeria to speak at a WHD event, sponsored by the Ministry of Health. In
addition, LLL Leaders in New York City will be attending a Department of
Public Information/Nongovernmental Organization (DPI/NGO) World Health Day
event where they will distribute the LLLI WHD document. Also, Kathy Baker,
Manager, LLLI Peer Counselor Program, will speak on breastfeeding and LLLI
at a WHD event at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois.
