Title: "Plausible explanations for effects of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) on neonates"
Authors: L.O. Kurlak, T.J. Stephenson
Authors L.O. Kurlak and T.J. Stephenson have built on the knowledge regarding the benefits of the long chain polyunsaturated fats which are present in human milk, how they benefit both pre- and full-term babies. It is explained that neonates cannot convert the essential fatty acid precursor molecules to their longer chain derivatives efficiently. Breastfed infants have a higher concentration of docosahexaenoic acid, which at four months results in improved visual acuity, with preterm infants being most pronounced. Supplementing formula with essential fatty acids did not increase the ratio of DHA and AA in plasma and red blood cell phospholipds, and benefits of formula supplementation appear to be transient.
