The benefits of breastfeeding are well documented. Most studies have concentrated on shorter duration of breastfeeding. Extended breastfeeding, over 12 months, has not been documented extensively in developed countries. In this study visit data were linked to determine the duration of breastfeeding, up to two years of age, and weight at four years of age. Extended breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of overweight among non-Hispanic white children. The benefits of breastfeeding extend well beyond the breastfeeding period.
