In this study 199 age-matched children (100 asthmatic and 99 non-asthmatic) who attended Maputo Central Hospital between January 1999 and July 2000 were studied. The age range was between 18 months and 8 years. 60% were males. The study showed that familial atopic background, place of residence, passive smoking and early weaning are important risk factors for childhood asthma in Maputo. The breastfeeding rate in Mozambique is very high, 94.8%. The mean duration of breastfeeding is 22.4 months.

All of the children in this study were breastfed, but the asthmatic children were weaned significantly earlier than the others. 61% were weaned before 18 months of age. The weaning median was 16 months, with a range of 8 to 20 months.
