1. NEW ON THE LLLI WEB SITE
The La Leche League Web site brings you breastfeeding information, news from LLLI and much more -- here's what we've added in the past month or so:
*Items from LLLI's Mid-Year 2003 Catalogue have been uploaded to our online store. We will have images and a picture of the catalogue soon! Visit our catalogue pages at http://www.lalecheleague.org/catalog.html to enter the online store, and remember, too, that you can request a free catalogue by phoning the Order Department at 847-519-7730. We are looking forward to a NEW and improved online store by the new year!
*LLLI's latest press release, on how breastfeeding remains the best choice for babies, even in our polluted world, can be read in its entirety at http://www.lalecheleague.org/Release/contaminants.html
*Two recent issues of LLLI's member publication, NEW BEGINNINGS have been uploaded and added to our large collection of breastfeeding material for parents. May-June 2003 articles are listed here:http://www.lalecheleague.org/nbdate.html#MayJune2003 and July-August 2003 articles are listed here: http://www.lalecheleague.org/nbdate.html#JulyAugust2003
*If you are looking for an LLL Group to attend, don't forget to visit our index of local LLL Group Web pages. Nine new Groups have been listed in the past month -- maybe one is near you! http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebIndex.html
2. UNITED STATES LLL WEB PAGE FORMAT CHANGES
The LLLUSA Steering Committee is working closely with the two US Divisions and LLLI to become the national organization linking US Leaders and members to LLLI. And, just as other Leaders around the world have their national organization's Web site, we are working hard to make the LLLUSA Web site a premiere source for breastfeeding and related information.
Volunteers working with Sue Ann Kendall have been gradually transitioning US-specific information about programs/services from the LLLI Web site to the LLLUSA one. In addition, we want to make it easy for people to find La Leche League in their neighborhood no matter which Web site they start from. Currently, there is a page on the LLLI site listing various countries, one of which is the USA (http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebUS.html). If you click on that, you see a list of the 50 states. Click on a state, and you'll see the Groups that have web pages there (regardless of who hosts them -- whether the Area creates them, individual Groups do their own, or LLLI does them). Soon, mothers will be able to find US information from the US Web site, as well, without having to go through the LLLI one first.
Behind-the-scenes changes have been made to the Web site host. We recently found out that we would be losing our access to Prairienet, the local hosting organization where many Group Web pages were housed. Because the two US Divisions already pay for a Web site, it made sense to move the hundreds of US pages once hosted on Prairienet to the LLLUSA site. We have nearly completed the changeover, thanks to heroic efforts by volunteer LLL Leader Jennifer Moquin, of Pennsylvania. Here is a sample of the revised look and feel: http://www.lllusa.org/web/LongviewTX.html
Note that some LLL Groups and Areas in the US maintain their own sites, and these are not affected by the change.
3. WORLD-FAMOUS SAILING, SHOPPING, DINING AND CONTINUING EDUCATION, TOO
Attend La Leche League International's 32nd Annual Seminar for Physicians on Breastfeeding: Breastfeeding: A Baby's Right, a Physician's Responsibility to be held in historic Newport, Rhode Island, July 26-28, 2004. La Leche League International, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists cosponsor this Seminar for Physicians to provide education in effective lactation management using a variety of techniques and approaches. The American Academy of Family Physicians is participating as a Cooperating Organization.
This three-day intensive Seminar covers the latest breastfeeding research and features a faculty of experts in the fields of lactation and family health care. The information presented at the seminar will enable physicians to provide the education and support necessary to facilitate successful and fulfilling breastfeeding experiences for their patients.
The Seminar will be held at the beautiful seaside Hyatt Regency Newport, Newport, Rhode Island. Newport is an ideal base for discovering New England's colonial coast. Historic Newport is legendary for its spectacular scenery and its scope of activities and attractions including world-famous sailing, shopping, and dining. Discover the beautiful mansions, the wildlife and bird sanctuaries, harbor cruises, and its many historical landmarks and museums. For more information on Newport Rhode Island, visit www.GoNewport.com
La Leche League's International Physicians Seminar is considered by many to be the premiere conference on breastfeeding for physicians. The Seminar provides a way to learn how to provide breastfeeding education and support, a chance to meet with a faculty of experts in the fields of lactation, and an opportunity to dialogue with physicians from around the world. Continuing Medical Education Credits are available. For further information on continuing education or the Seminar for Physicians, please email Sally Murphy at smurphy at llli.org.
4. LLLI COULD BE BELEFITTING FROM YOUR HOLIDAY SHOPPING!
Dear La Leche League Supporter,
If you could give La Leche League International up to 26% of each everyday purchase you made at no extra cost to you ... would you?
I thought you would. And that's exactly what happens when you join the online community called iGive.com. It doesn't cost a cent to join and once you're a member, every time you shop the Mall at iGive.com we receive a percentage of each purchase you make. That means more money for LLLI to support breastfeeding women around the world.
Just think of it -- free money for La Leche League; your choice of over 400 well-known online merchants like Barnes & Noble, Eddie Bauer, Lands' End, and PETsMART; your privacy guaranteed; plus money-saving deals and specials every day!
We hope you can't resist!
Join by visiting http://www.iGive.com/LLLI now. And if you join by November 30 and make your first purchase within 45 days, iGive will donate an additional $5 to LLLI. Imagine if 1000 Leaders and Members did that - we'd receive a $5000 check to support mothers and babies! That's in addition to the percentages each store purchase earns LLLI.
As the holiday shopping season nears, we can work together to make this a successful fundraiser for LLLI. If you are currently leading meetings, please share this information about iGive with your LLL Group, friends and family.

5. UPDATE FROM LLL OF COLOMBIA
Some wonderful work has been going on in Colombia, where breastfeeding is vitally important, due to many malnourished babies and young children, and few resources to help other than breastfeeding. Please visit our Web page describing how over 600 people were trained to help mothers and babies by LLL of Medellin and others:
This is a wonderful reminder of how La Leche League helps mothers and babies in so many creative ways around the world, and how important the work of LLLI is.
6. CENTER FOR BREASTFEEDING INFORMATION NEWS
To those who have designated donations for the Center for Breastfeeding Information, let us say a special 'Thank you!' The CBI is making use of some of these funds to purchase a scanner. This will enable us to share information in a more efficient manner and will be especially helpful to those Professional Liaison Leaders outside the United States, who have difficulty obtaining specific resources and who are authorized to share copyrighted materials. Sundeep Kak of LLLI's IT Department has been involved in the selection of the scanner, and making sure that it will be compatible with our present equipment.
If you have not visited the Center for Breastfeeding Information Web pages lately, consider giving them a look. There is a Breastfeeding Paper of the Month feature that tells you a bit about a current research paper each month, at http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/journal.html, and there are copies of the CBI's selected bibliographies on specific breastfeeding topics, which are updated frequently, as well as some other important breastfeeding research links at http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/additional.html. There's always something new on the CBI pages!
7. WORLD WALK FOR BREASTFEEDING WINDING UP FOR 2003
We hope you were able to participate in the annual World Walk for Breastfeeding or other World Breastfeeding Month activity where you live (unless you live somewhere that WBW is celebrated in October!). If you hosted a Walk, don't forget to turn in all your information to LLLI -- contact the PR Department if you have any questions (prassociate at llli.org will route the information for you). If you would like to post a little bit about your walk on our Web site, feel free to contact us. We had a record number of Groups (138!) post their Walk information at http://www.lalecheleague.org/walk/walkworld03.html this year, and we thank all who sent something in. Of course, thanks go to all LLL Leaders, members and friends who participated in a World Walk!

With increasing rates of breastfeeding initiation, it is essential that lactation specialists have access to the skills, information and education that will enable them to meet the needs of mothers and babies. Developing a knowledge base that can help them to assist mothers in achieving their goals will result in increased breastfeeding duration.
