Pregnant or Nursing Mother on Your Holiday Gift List?

The best gift you can give a pregnant or nursing mother on your list is encouragement. She needs the confidence to know that she can breastfeed.

Information about breastfeeding is also a vital gift. One of the best sources of such information is the seventh revised edition of THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, available from La Leche League International. This classic guide to breastfeeding reflects current research while maintaining its trademark style of mother-to-mother sharing. Read more about it at

Nursing stools, pillows, and carriers are all useful for the new mother. For other ideas, visit LLLI's Web site at

Work is well underway for the "Facts About Breastfeeding, 2004." As always, there is a huge number of positive articles which have been gathered together for consideration to make the special compilation of research on our "Fact Sheet." Some articles which have been selected as the "Breastfeeding Abstract of the Month" from the Center for Breastfeeding Information pages of the website ( )might also appear again on the "Fact" list. In addition to sharing abstracted information on benefits to the breastfeeding baby and mother, efforts are made to include some research specific to health care providers and those involved in public health (insurance companies, HMOs, WIC, etc.). Again this year, some research documents the "programming" of breastfeeding: the long-term benefits which are seen many years after breastfeeding and weaning has occured. Sharing the information on our "Fact Sheet" is a useful tool for Leaders in an "Advantages" meeting. The CBI is hoping to have this work completed by the end of the year.
