8. NEWS FROM THE CENTER FOR BREASTFEEDING INFORMATION

Each month, the Center for Breastfeeding Information features a current breastfeeding-related research article, providing citation and an abstract. This month's entry is:

"Nutritional and physiologic significance of human milk proteins"
Author: Bo Lonnerdal
Am J Clin Nutr 2003;77(suppl):1537S-43S
"Breast milk proteins assist in providing adequate nutrition to breastfed infants while simultaneously aiding in the defense against infection and facilitating optimal development of important physiologic functions in newborns."

To read the rest of the abstract, visit http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/journal.html (after this month, it will be archived in the past articles of the month collection).

In other news, Katy Lebbing, BS, IBCLC, will be the new Manager for the CBI beginning February 2, 2004. Carol Huotari, who previously managed the CBI, will be working part time from home (mostly) and will support Katy in this new role. Katy has worked on the LLLI 800 line, as well as in the LLLI office managing the Breastfeeding Resource Centers, and will continue to handle that department. Katy worked for years in the Illinois Professional Liaison Department and has a private lactation consultant practice of her own.

And finally, the "2004 Facts About Breastfeeding" work has been compiled and is now with our Publications Department. It should be available soon.

9. LLLI REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDS MOTHER SUPPORT GROUP MEETING IN INDIA

On December 12, 2003, Rebecca Magalhães attended a meeting of Mother Support Group (MSG) Leaders in Mumbai (Bombay) India, that included a buffet lunch and participation by members of the Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI). Dr. Prashant Gangal, a BPNI member and Co-Coordinator of the WABA Mother Support Task Force, organized the meeting and facilitated the discussion that ensued on mother support and breastfeeding. Ms. Magalhães described the LLLI methodology of mother-to-mother support (MtMS), particularly in relation to LLL MtMS groups that are based in the communities where the LLL Leaders (community breastfeeding counselors) live and volunteer. The MSG Leaders also presented breastfeeding situations to the group and participants shared information on the resolution of these situations.
