2. NEWS FROM LLL URUGUAY
In November 2000 La Leche League Leaders from all over Latin America gathered in Puerto Rico for their Regional Workshop entitled "Sowing Seeds". As a part of this workshop many of them received the Training of Trainers for Breastfeeding Peer Counselors. The Leaders from Uruguay returned to their country, eager to duplicate this idea.
By 2002 they had joined in cooperative agreement with government and civil organizations in Uruguay to provide the training in a test population. For their first project they trained 20 peer counselors and just recently completed the evaluation of this process. The results were so positive that the government's Health Agency wants to duplicate it all over the country, focusing on high risk population areas. So far, the trainings have taken place in 8 community outreach centers in Montevideo, Uruguay's capital and one in Maldonado. This outreach is made possible by the financial backing of the Interamerican Development Bank, the government of Uruguay and La Leche League of Uruguay who provides training, materials and oversight to the project.
Truly seeds have been sown that are now bringing fruit. We hope many more Leaders will be inspired to creatively reach out into their communities at our next Regional Workshop in Jalapa, Mexico, September 16-19, 2004. For information on attending this workshop or to help bring this educational experience to more Leaders in these developing nations, please contact Norma Escobar, Regional Administrator of Leaders - Latin America at email@example.com.
3. LLLI TRANSPORTATION UPDATE
Last month, we reported that contributions were needed to help the LLL office in Schaumburg, Illinois purchase a new vehicle for transporting packages and visitors around the area. We are happy to report that some good donations have come in! Area LLL Conferences in Southern California/Nevada, Texas and elsewhere took collections that have upped the total by a few thousand dollars. To the Area (or Affiliate) that brings in the most money, LLLI will provide a book for your Professional Liaison Leaders. You can choose between the BAB and CD, or the new Riordan book, Breastfeeding and Human Lactation, or two copies of the new Hale book, Medications and Mother's Milk.
Individual contributions are also very welcome -- with just a few more, our vital shipments and our valued guests will soon be riding in style in a nice, sensible used van! Any help that anyone can give us will be greatly appreciated! Please send donations in US funds to LLLI office at the address below, clearly marked for Van Replacement Fund. You can also contribute online at https://www.lalecheleague.org/cc_contrib.html and mark "Van Replacement Fund" in the "please use my gift for..." field.
4. BREASTFEEDING IN THE NEWS
We heard that many enjoyed the links to breastfeeding articles on the World Wide Web that we shared last month. Please bear in mind that none of them are sponsored by LLLI, and that they are presented for informational purposes only. Here are some items that have come in during the past month:
*Benefits Of Breast-Feeding Wide Ranging
*Breastfed babies make happier adults: Bond between nursing mother and child is a factor, researcher says
*Study: Mouth Bacteria May Defend Against AIDS Virus
These are samples of the kinds of research that will be categorized in the Center for Breastfeeding Information database in the near future! Read more at at http://www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/cbi.html
5. LOOKING FOR LOGO FABRIC
The LLLI Alum Association is collecting the old LLL logo fabric. If you have some and want to let it go, please mail it to, or contact:

8. US HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES BREASTFEEDING CAMPAIGN DETAILS
While everyone in the LLL community in the US is excited about the new Health and Human Services breastfeeding advocacy campaign (see our media release, "LLLI Applauds Breastfeeding Campaign," at http://www.lalecheleague.org/Release/campaign2.html), not all of us have had the opportunity to see the public service announcements (PSAs) developed by the Ad Council. If you are interested, these PSAs are available online at the following Web page:
There are two television ads plus two radio spots, one for country music stations and one for soul. There is also a print ad in English and one in Spanish. As you may have heard, the ads use humor and irony to convey the risks of not breastfeeding. We're still chuckling around the office at the country song about "Momma" that includes lines like, "That woman could lactate like nobody's business," and ends with, "Y'all breastfeed now, y'hear?"
You will also be happy to see a link to our very own LLLI Web site on the Ad Council site at:
Our volunteer Leaders and trained 800 line staff are preparing for an increase in phone calls and we all look forward to the new focus on the importance of breastfeeding. We hope this campaign will bring public attention and support that enables LLL to reach more mothers and babies in the USA and beyond.
9. WORLD BREASTFEEDING WEEK CELEBRATIONS
More than 230 US La Leche League Groups, Chapters, Areas and other entities (including the US Western Division and LLL Online) are busy planning exciting activities to celebrate World Breastfeeding Week in August. The LLLUSA World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations Web pages will tell you how to get started, and our list of participating Groups and list of event details will help you find a WBW Event near you to join in. Help La Leche League celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding to mother and baby by joining us!
