La Leche League International is celebrating "The Year of the Group" at this time. As part of the celebration, we are collecting information about the origins of LLL Groups around the world. There is a listing at http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/YOGlist.html that provides information on 100 or more Groups in at least ten different countries. Is YOUR LLL Group mentioned there? If not, and you are the Leader or someone who knows when the Group was founded, fill out the form linked to the Year of the Group page. Or contact your local LLL Leader and ask her to submit the information about your Group. Prizes will be awarded to Groups who register, ranging from a brand-new Group to one that's been around almost as long as La Leche League, which will soon be celebrating 50 years in existence!

Do you like to know what's happening around the world in breastfeeding? Are you curious about what's going on in breastfeeding across the ocean? If you are, you might be interested in subscribing to the Mother Support Task Force E-Newsletter, produced in English, Spanish and French. As a Core Partner with the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) and with continued WABA funding, LLLI and two LLL Leaders in Paraguay have begun the second year of an electronic newsletter focused on breastfeeding and mother support. The newsletter is an activity of the WABA Mother Support Task Force, coordinated by Rebecca Magalhães, director, External Relations & Advocacy, LLLI, who assists the Paraguayan Leaders in producing the newsletter. The newsletter contains sections on: mother support from different sources; breastfeeding mothers and their experiences; news from the breastfeeding world; mother support news from Brasil, father support and much more. In this newsletter you will learn about the Global Initiative for Mother Support (GIMS) and the Global Initiative for Father Support (GIFS). You can subscribe by sending an email message MSTFNewsletter-request@braesgate.com with "subscribe" in the Subject field. The email can be blank. If you would like a copy of the most recent issue (Jan/Feb/March/2005), email Rebecca RMagalhaes at llli.org or Pushpa ppanadam@telesurf.com.py and specify the language you want. This issue will be available on the WABA Web site http://www.waba.org.my, where you will also find past issues.

For any organization or individual working in the areas affected by the Tsunami tragedy, La Leche League International would like to offer the following sources of information on breastfeeding in an emergency situation. LLLI staff has created a web page of information on this topic by pulling together existing LLL materials. This page can be accessed from the LLLI home page at http://www.lalecheleague.org by clicking on "Click for Tsunami Info." Also, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) has produced a list of sources of information on breastfeeding in emergencies at http://www.waba.org.my/tsunami.htm . The WABA secretariat is based in one of the affected countries (Penang, Malaysia). Also based in Penang is the International Code Documentation Centre (ICDC) which works on compliance of the International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes (email: ibfanpg@tm.net.my) and can offer advice in situations related to the distribution of food to infants and small children. We would like to further note that there are LLL Leaders living in the area if there is a need for breastfeeding consultations or assistance. Please email Hedy Nuriel, Executive Director, LLLI HNuriel at llli.org if you would like to enter into contact with these Leaders.

The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners is evaluating the possibility of creating a certification for such allied health care professionals and paraprofessionals as WIC counselors, midwives, dieticians, speech pathologists, public health workers, and others who work closely with breastfeeding women and their families. This certification will define international standards for the education and training of these individuals, as well as provide recognition for their expertise. It would require fewer hours of practical experience and education than the IBCLC credential, but would still require passing an exam to verify lactation knowledge and the ability to provide appropriate and effective care for breastfeeding women and their children. Training for these individuals would include recognition of problems that are beyond their scope of practice and which should be referred to an IBCLC or other medical professional.

This survey is designed to solicit feedback from a target audience of potential applicants for this credential and their employers (whether or not it is appealing to you at this time). If you are in this target audience, we would appreciate your giving us a few minutes to complete this survey. Your feedback is important in helping shape the future of this profession. All responses will be kept confidential and used only for group data analysis.

Current IBCLCs and others who are not potential candidates or their employers, but who are eager to provide input into the future of this credential, may send email with your comments to: survey@iblce.org.

Donations totaling just over $120,000 will go to support LLLI programs like volunteer Leader Accreditation, the Peer Counseling Program, the Center for Breastfeeding Information, and the LLLI Conference. In addition to our annual appeal, we posted a request for donations to support a new LLLI Information Network back in December. We are pleased to report we have received several donations, large and small, and are well on our way. A special thank you to the donors who have already contributed to improving our customer service and information management through this exciting new activity. We know how important it is that we meet the needs of mothers and our Leaders as quickly and efficiently as possible and we look forward to having the tools to do that very soon!
