This year LLLI is launching a new fundraiser that we think you will enjoy. We are organizing "house parties" to celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of our organization, as well as fundraise for our future. Donations received at the parties will be used for the new 50th Anniversary Fund.

What is the 50th Anniversary Fund?

The 50th Anniversary Fund is designed to support the basic programs of La Leche League International as we move into our sixth decade of serving mothers and babies.

While much of LLL work is done by volunteers and requires little or no funding, many LLL programs need financial support. LLLI produces publications as simple as tear-off sheets on the benefits of breastfeeding and as complex as a 680-page reference book for health professionals and lay breastfeeding counselors. We operate the Center for Breastfeeding Information - the world's largest research collection of breastfeeding studies. LLLI conducts international conferences, workshops for lactation specialists, and seminars for physicians. LLLI's Peer Counseling Program trains women to support breastfeeding in minority and low-income communities. The 800 Helpline at LLLI provides immediate counseling for mothers in need and refers families to the local LLL group in their area for ongoing support. The LLLI Web site reaches millions of homes and offices with accurate breastfeeding information and connections to local community support. LLLI works with international agencies such as UNICEF and WHO to ensure that breastfeeding stays on the policy agenda.

All of these activities require funding and it is an annual struggle to ensure support for our programs. LLLI has spent too many years working through budget crunches that force reduction in programs that are already run on a shoestring. We are a mature organization now and it is time to think about our finances in a different and more responsible way. The goal of the 50th Anniversary Fund is to raise $500,000 by 2007 in order to ensure support for LLLI's basic programs and services for many years to come.

None of us want to wonder if La Leche League will be there to support our daughters and granddaughters as they enter motherhood. We hope you will join in our efforts to sustain LLLI well into the next 50 years!

For more information, log onto and start planning to host or attend a house party for the 50th Anniversary Fund.

Heidi Kuonen-Goetz, LLLI/UN Representative and LLL Leader/LLL of Switzerland represented La Leche League International at the World Health Organization Executive Board 115th Session, which took place from January 17-25, 2005 in Geneva Switzerland.

The LLLI office in Schaumburg IL USA registered five (5) La Leche League Leaders to attend and represent the organization at the Forty-Ninth Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) to be held from 28 February to 11 March 2005 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, USA. The CSW 49th Session will focus on a review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform of Action (4th World Conference of Women held in 1995 in Beijing China) and current challenges and forward looking strategies for empowerment of women and girls.

As part of the annual process of Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs) in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations, LLL Leaders were registered by LLLI for the 2005 accreditation; four LLL Leaders for NGO Section/New York City, USA; two LLL Leaders for NGO Liaison Office/Geneva, Switzerland; and one LLL Leader for the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Two LLL Leaders were registered by LLLI for 2005 as LLLI Representatives of NGOs associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information, based in New York City, USA.

On January 21, 2005, LLLI submitted two proposals to the WBDM competition. One of the proposals titled "Breastfeeding: The Beginning of a Sound Environment." is a collaborative effort between LLLI and Project Kesher (a non-profit organization based in Illinois, USA) to implement breastfeeding and mother support activities in Ukraine, utilizing the Project Kesher network and field staff in that country. The second proposal "Human Milk: An Important Natural Resource" proposes to implement a community-based breastfeeding peer counselor program in one community in Pakistan, as a joint effort of LLLI, Health for Humanity (a PVO based in Wilmette Illinois, USA) and Resource Centre for Development Alternatives (RCDA), a local non-profit educational organization in Pakistan. The Development Marketplace is a way for the World Bank to identify and directly support innovative bottom-up development ideas that deliver results, which can then be expanded or replicated elsewhere. The general theme for the 2005 competition was: Innovations for Livelihoods in a Sustainable Environment. The competition is operated in two rounds and LLLI will know by the first of April if it has advanced to Round 2 with one or both of the proposals. If you have questions or are interested in knowing more about these proposals, please contact Stephanie Weishaar, Funding Development Department SWeishaar at or Rebecca Magalhaes, External Relations & Advocacy RMagalhaes at
