Schaumburg, IL (October 2005) La Leche League International (LLLI) is concerned about the October 10, 2005 policy statement on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) issued by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Task Force on SIDS. The recommendations about pacifiers and cosleeping in the statement reflect a lack of basic understanding about breastfeeding management.

Pacifiers, which are recommended in this policy statement, are artificial substitutes for what the breast does naturally. Breastfed babies often nurse to sleep for naps and bedtime. The recommended pacifier usage could cause a reduction in milk supply due to reduced stimulation of the breasts and may affect breastfeeding duration.

LLLI recognizes that safe cosleeping facilitates breastfeeding. One important way cosleeping can help a mother's milk supply is by encouraging regular and frequent feeding. Well-known research on safe cosleeping practices by Dr. James McKenna, Director of the Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory at Notre Dame University was disregarded by the task force.

Also, the obvious omission of input by the AAP's Section on Breastfeeding may account for the fact that breastfeeding management issues were not taken into consideration. Dr. Nancy Wight, President of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, comments that this statement "represents a truly astounding triumph of ethnocentric assumptions over common sense and medical research." Dr. Wight also states, "There are many physician members of the AAP who do not agree with these recommendations."

Although the authors do state that breastfeeding is beneficial and should be promoted, their recommendations about pacifier use and cosleeping could have a negative impact on a mother's efforts to breastfeed. The statement causes confusion for parents and fall seriously short of being a useful and comprehensive policy.

LLLI, a non-profit organization that helps mothers learn about breastfeeding, has an international Professional Advisory Board. The LLLI Center for Breastfeeding Information is one of the world's largest libraries of information on breastfeeding, human lactation, and related topics. Monthly meetings are offered to pregnant women and nursing mothers and babies to learn about breastfeeding management. To find local groups call 800 LA LECHE or visit

Are you wearing your purple bracelet to help encourage, support and protect breastfeeding? Did you know that, thanks to the proceeds from the sale of these bracelets, LLLI has created a new collection of web pages designed to encourage mothers, fathers and others to encourage, protect and support breastfeeding. We are in the process of creating many new pages about mothers' legal rights to breastfeeding and listing ways to support breastfeeding mothers in your community. Thank you for your support, and stay tuned! The new collection can be found at

Lansinoh has partnered with La Leche League International on The Breastfeeding Protection Initiative (tm) because LLLI is the leading provider of comprehensive information on breastfeeding rights. All profits on sale of the bracelets will go to help LLLI. The bracelets can be purchased at -- Many local La Leche League Groups also have a supply available for purchase.

Wear the bracelet yourself or give it to a new mother to show that you respect her important decision to breastfeed her baby. A new mother can also use the bracelet to help her remember which side she nursed on at the last feeding.

You may have heard that LLLI is in the midst of a long-term information system upgrade project, designed to improve and add to many of our online services and our internal computer systems. Our first sub-project has just launched: online versions of our acclaimed Independent Study Modules. These modules will be very convenient for busy lactation professionals and others who need continuing education credits involving breastfeeding issues. Online Independent Study Modules from LLLI feature study text and tests exactly the same as the print versions! Users download the text for study and future reference, then take the timed test online when they are ready.

There's no need to wait, either -- test takers are notified of their score immediately and receive certificates for their continuing education credits in the mail. And as a bonus, LLLI notifies the certifying organization of the credits that have been awarded within four weeks, half the time it takes for notification for the paper Independent Study Module test.

We now have six modules available, with more to come in the next few weeks. To learn more about the topics available and the procedures for taking the test, visit the LLLI Store.

Shop the same way...Donate a different way!

La Leche League International signed on with a new service called FreePledge in October. FreePledge is an e-commerce website devoted to help nonprofit organizations raise money by donating a percentage of online purchases. The FreePledge program gives our organization an additional source of revenue at no cost to you or us! By leveraging a marketing program set up by Amazon, one of the world's largest online retailers, FreePledge turns a percentage of everyday shopping into donations for your favorite charity. Your online purchases like books, videos, CDs, and electronics can support LLLI. (Of course we hope you will still buy LLLI books directly from us, but there are so many other things you can get from Amazon.) FreePledge assures you of the simplest online shopping experience: no membership, no obligation, and no cost to you. The actual purchases go through Amazon and you receive the same great service. You may visit, shop as if you would shop on Amazon directly, and a portion of your purchases will go to support mothers and babies through LLLI.

The La Leche League International Year-end Appeal will be landing in your mailbox and on our website soon. Have you thought about what you can contribute this year? So many of us have contributed to disaster relief and other important causes over the past few months, yet mothers and babies still need breastfeeding support. La Leche League is there when pregnant mothers have questions and new mothers are worried. La Leche League provides resources to mothers, medical professionals, and so many others in an effort to ensure that every baby has the opportunity to experience the benefits of breastfeeding. Even when that baby weans, LLLI continues to be a source of information and support for the family as they learn about nutrition, discipline, and other parenting topics. Please give generously to LLLI and ensure that we are here when that next mother calls.
