*If you are looking for an LLL Group in your vicinity to attend, don't forget to visit our index of local LLL Group Web pages, or choose a country from our convenient drop-down menu listing all countries and regions with LLL sites. Four new US Groups have been listed in the past month, in Indiana, New Mexico, and Ohio. To find all these, look at our collection of local LLL Web pages:

Thousands of women, men and children are now wearing purple bracelets to help encourage, support and protect breastfeeding. Thanks to the proceeds from the sale of these bracelets, LLLI is continuing to upgrade our new collection of web pages designed to encourage mothers, fathers and others to encourage, protect and support breastfeeding. The new collection can be found at

LLLI, as part of the Encourage, Promote and Protect Breastfeeding Initiative is seeking information regarding laws pertaining to breastfeeding in countries around the world (outside of the United States) to add to the web site. We are looking for laws that would cover working outside the home and breastfeeding, breastfeeding in public, family law, and other breastfeeding related issues. Additionally, non-legal information regarding these topics is welcome especially on the topic of breastfeeding in public. If you are aware of any legal cases in which breastfeeding is involved, we would like to hear about those matters. In addition, if there are stories from any non-US entity about legal difficulties women have had with breastfeeding, please let me know. Please contact: Melissa Vance,

Lansinoh has partnered with La Leche League International on The Breastfeeding Protection Initiative (tm), because LLLI is the leading provider of comprehensive information on breastfeeding rights. All profits on sale of the bracelets will go to help LLLI. The bracelets can be purchased at -- Many local La Leche League Groups also have a supply available for purchase. Wear the bracelet yourself or give it to a new mother to show that you respect her important decision to breastfeed her baby.

3. NO PAIN AND ALL GAIN! Raise money for La Leche League International without writing a check!

As you do your on-line holiday shopping, remember that you can contribute to LLLI by using two special Web sites: iGive and FreePledge. FreePledge enables buyers to donate a percentage of their everyday shopping at to LLLI. Visit and shop just as you would on Amazon directly and a portion of your purchases will be donated to LLLI. The La Leche League International Year-end Appeal information is now on our Web site -- there is a lot of intriguing information on how we help mothers: Have you thought about what you can contribute this year? So many of us have contributed to disaster relief and other important causes over the past few months, yet mothers and babies still need breastfeeding support. La Leche League is there when pregnant mothers have questions and new mothers are worried. La Leche League provides resources to mothers, medical professionals, and so many others in an effort to ensure that every baby has the opportunity to experience the benefits of breastfeeding. Even when that baby weans, LLLI continues to be a source of information and support for the family as they learn about nutrition, discipline, and other parenting topics. Please give generously to LLLI and ensure that we are here when that next mother calls.

Fifteen years ago, at the WHO/UNICEF policymakers' meeting on "Breastfeeding in the 1990s: A Global Initiative" in Florence, Italy, the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding was produced and adopted. The Declaration, adopted by all WHO and UNICEF Member States, has been a key strategy on improving the health of infants and young children through breastfeeding.

To mark the 15th anniversary of the adoption of the Innocenti Declaration, the Regional Authority of Tuscany ( and the UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre ( will co-host a celebration in Florence on 21 and 22 November 2005. This celebratory event is jointly organized by a wide coalition ( As a member of the Coalition planning the celebration, La Leche League International will be represented by Hedy Nuriel, Executive Director and Rebecca Magalhaes, LLLI External Relations and Advocacy department.

You can take part in this important celebration by visiting the Innocenti Web site at where you will read more about current documents, as well as the activities that will take place in Florence. While at the web site, be sure and register in the guest book and submit information about programs and activities that you have done or are doing, to protect, promote and support breastfeeding. You will want to continue to monitor the Innocenti 15 web site for documents, a new Declaration and future plans.

There is so much going on about the upcoming 50th anniversary of La Leche League that we can't fit it all here. Please visit our web page of plans to see what is happening now, and visit often, as we will soon be adding a lot more information!

The LLLI Conference Team is committed to providing a conference that brings you interesting, inspiring, and knowledgeable speakers; as well as topics that are timely and appealing. We can only do this if you let us know who you want to hear and what topics you want them to address.

As this will be our 20th International Conference and it will celebrate 50 years of La Leche League, we have a keen interest in featuring either current or former Leaders, members, or longtime friends of La Leche League who have forged their own path and made their name in the fields of parenting, childbirth, breastfeeding or personal growth and development. Visit to make your submission today.

You may have heard that LLLI is in the midst of a long-term information system upgrade project, designed to improve and add to many of our online services and our internal computer systems. Our first sub-project has just launched: online versions of our acclaimed Independent Study Modules. These modules will be very convenient for busy lactation professionals and others who need continuing education credits involving breastfeeding issues. Online Independent Study Modules from LLLI feature study text and tests exactly the same as the print versions! Users download the text for study and future reference, then take the timed test online when they are ready.

There's no need to wait, either -- test takers are notified of their score immediately and receive certificates for their continuing education credits in the mail. And as a bonus, LLLI notifies the certifying organization of the credits that have been awarded within four weeks, half the time it takes for notification for the paper Independent Study Module test.

We now have NINE modules available, with the newest about iron metabolism in breastfed infants. To learn more about the topics available and the procedures for taking the test, visit Independent Study Modules.

As a Core partner in the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) LLLI would like to share with you two recent grant opportunities that are being offered by WABA. The first one is the Global Initiative for Father Support (GIFS) Seedgrants Programme. This programme aims to establish or strengthen men/father support groups in breastfeeding protection, promotion and support. To find out about this funding opportunity and access the application form, go to The deadline for the application is 15 January 2006. The second grant opportunity, which can be found at offers seed grants for organizations to work with maternity protection and breastfeeding. The application is also due 15 January 2006. Please share information about these two funding opportunities with others.

Shop the same way...Donate a different way!

La Leche League International signed on with a new service called FreePledge in October. FreePledge is an e-commerce web site devoted to help nonprofit organizations raise money by donating a percentage of online purchases. The FreePledge program gives our organization an additional source of revenue at no cost to you or us! By leveraging a marketing program set up by Amazon, one of the world's largest online retailers, FreePledge turns a percentage of everyday shopping into donations for your favorite charity. Your online purchases like books, videos, CDs, and electronics can support LLLI. (Of course we hope you will still buy LLLI books directly from us, but there are so many other things you can get from Amazon.) FreePledge assures you of the simplest online shopping experience: no membership, no obligation, and no cost to you. The actual purchases go through Amazon and you receive the same great service. You may visit, shop as if you would shop on Amazon directly, and a portion of your purchases will go to support mothers and babies through LLLI.

LLLI would like to share with you the most recent WABA Mother Support Task Force E-Newsletter. The electronic newsletter, which is published in English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, is available for viewing at This issue is full of information on the importance of breastfeeding in emergencies with articles from persons working in the aftermath of the Katrina disaster in the USA and the rains and mudslides that happened in Guatemala. The newsletter also has an extensive section on father support in breastfeeding. Please share with others and consider submitting an article for inclusion in a future issue.

La Leche League International (LLLI) is pleased to announce a new and exciting opportunity to support LLLI its mission, while purchasing gifts for yourself or loved ones. La Leche League International has recently partnered with Family Featured Products (FFP), a company that produces high quality personalized products that are popular with virtually all new mothers and their families. Much of the popularity of their products is because mothers have many pictures of their babies and are looking for ways to enjoy their photos and share them with friends, family and co-workers. Mothers, you now have the opportunity to have your baby's photos featured on products that can be given as gifts to family members or to use for yourself. With so many products to choose from; calendars, candles, wrapping paper, announcement cards, and photo plaques; there is something for everyone. Better still, twenty-five percent of each purchase goes to La Leche League International, which can greatly assist in supporting and fostering the LLLI goals of promoting a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development between you and your baby. Visit today to find out more.
