Two new US Groups have been listed in the past month, in Michigan and Wisconsin. To find all these, look at our collection of local LLL Web pages: http://www.lalecheleague.org/WebIndex.html.
2. MOTHER-TO-MOTHER SUPPORT FORUMS ARE OFF AND RUNNING
At last! La Leche League International is very happy to announce that we have set up a new Internet community for parents. The Mother-to-Mother Support Forums are a "bulletin board" type of environment, where participants can ask and answer questions, share their experiences, and get support from La Leche League, as well. At the time of this writing, close to 500 people had already signed on since the launch on January 13! There are areas for discussing topics ranging from newborn issues to nutrition and discipline. Please join us and make friends and get breastfeeding help at the same time. You are welcome to share the address of the forums with your friends and family, as well as on email lists and other boards. We look forward to seeing you on the boards, and to receiving your comments and suggestions.
We are very grateful for the donation that enabled us to replace our old, outdated bulletin board with this modern, helpful and feature-filled environment. Bookmark this page so you can return often: http://www.lalecheleague.org/vbulletin
3. NEW LLLI ALUMNAE ASSOCIATION COORDINATOR
LLLI Executive Director Hedy Nuriel recently sent out this message:
The LLLI Alumnae Association has a new Coordinator: Marilyn Thompson, retired LLL Leader, and Alumnae member, from Plymouth, Minnesota. Marilyn brings to this position some new and exciting ideas, and, experience with Dale Carnegie Training in several Midwest states.
Marilyn states: "Alumnae members and potential members are women with wisdom and experience. We are valued for our life experiences. I look forward to building relationships with the Alumnae Council and members, listening to suggestions, putting some plans in place, and working as a more active member of this wonderful organization that I believe in."
Marilyn was featured in an article several years ago in the Alumnae publication, CONTINUUM. See http://www.lalecheleague.org/Alumnae/Life-Thompson.htmto find out more about her participation in the "Big Ride Across America", a fundraising ride for the American Lung Association.
I would also like to thank Pam Oselka for leading the Alumnae Association for over 14 years. Pam will continue to be on staff at LLLI, devoting her time to other fundraising efforts, and as a member of the Alumnae Council.
4. PURCHASE ITEMS FROM OUR RECOMMENDED LIST DIRECTLY FROM OUR SITE
You may know that in the US, the LLL Book Evaluation Committee maintains a listing of books appropriate for use in La Leche League Group libraries (http://www.laelcheleague.org/llleaderweb/BEC/bookapp.html). This list also serves as a wonderful bibliography of materials supportive of LLLI philosophy, which you can feel confident in purchasing for yourself or someone you know. While LLLI can't offer all these books and other materials in its print or online catalogues (see http://www.lalecheleague.org/catalog.html), we would like to make it easier for parents to obtain these materials on our website. You can now visit our recommended reading page and purchase over 200 items from the Amazon.com website, at great prices, and know that your purchase also helps La Leche League International. Please review this extensive list of wonderful books and other products and see if there's something there that will help you, a friend, or a loved one: http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/BEC/amazon.html
5. LLLI 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Starting in the summer of 2006, and continuing through the Conference at the end of July in 2007, LLLI will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. Some of the goals of this yearlong celebration will be to educate the public about the value of breastfeeding, update the image of LLL, and increase interest, support, and membership. If you would like to be a part of this celebration, offer suggestions about ways to celebrate this event all over the world, or volunteer to be a part of our 50th Anniversary Team, see http://www.lalecheleague.org/fiftieth.html.
6. PROPOSALS SUBMITTED TO WABA SEEDGRANT PROGRAMMES
LLLI submitted one proposal to the WABA Global Initiative for Father Support (GIFS) Seedgrant Programme and another proposal to the WABA Maternity Protection Seedgrant Programme. The GIFS submission proposes to utilize a team of Spanish speaking fathers/men to produce Spanish material to help fathers support breastfeeding, with the document to be available on the LLLI website for downloading. The submission to the Maternity Protection Seedgrant Programme would utilize the LLLI publication "Hirkani's Daughters" as a beginning point and the stories that were submitted by Spanish speaking mothers, to produce a Spanish "Hirkani's Daughters"? that would also be available as a PDF on the internet.
7. LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS!
Have you been thinking about finding a project to sink your teeth into this year? Would you like to take your passion for breastfeeding and mother-to-mother support and use it to better our organization? Are you interested in working with La Leche League International to raise funds for the 50th Anniversary? We are currently recruiting several volunteers and a few potentially stipended positions to work on fundraising. If you have skills in writing proposals, working with corporate donors, raising funds locally or at higher levels, speaking about LLL to the general public, or anything you feel is related, please contact Stephanie Weishaar, Director of Funding Development at LLLI. Send an e-mail to sweishaar at llli.org and get the conversation started.
8. PLANNING A PARTY? NEED AN EXCUSE TO HOLD A PARTY?
Have you considered hosting a House Party Fundraiser for the LLLI 50th Anniversary? If you are already planning an event this year (birthday party, Tupperware party, anniversary party, backyard barbeque, etc.), please consider turning it into a House Party. Ask your guests to bring a donation for LLLI instead of a birthday or hostess gift. Set a goal and see if you can meet or exceed it. Send notes to the guests who missed your party and ask them to participate anyhow by making a donation online. Hosting a House Party is easy and it is fun! Help La Leche League International provide mother-to-mother support for breastfeeding women for another 50 years. Learn more at http://www.partyhostcenter.com/lalecheleague and join the party!
