6. OUR NEWEST BOOK, HIRKANI'S DAUGHTERS
La Leche League International proudly presents Hirkani's Daughters: Women Who Scale Modern Mountains to Combine Breastfeeding and Working. This book is like sharing coffee with a friend. Doctors, teachers, maids, comedians, scientists, professors, daycare providers (and more) from over thirty-five countries and six continents warmly tell tales about the challenges and joys of combining breastfeeding and work. In addition, you will see what it takes for a business to be breastfeeding-friendly: this book features some who are making strides. You will also find tips and explanations on common questions and you will discover what laws exist for breastfeeding mothers the world over. All working mothers will delight in this collection -- a treasure trove of support, and a peek into the hearts and homes of others who have succeeded at combining breastfeeding with work. To find out more or to order your copy today please visit http://lalecheleague.org/books/hirkani.html.
7. REGISTRATION MATERIALS FOR 2006 PHYSICIANS SEMINAR ON BREASTFEEDING NOW AVAILABLE
La Leche League International presents Breastfeeding: Research into Practice, the 34th Physicians Seminar on Breastfeeding, which takes place July 24-26, 2006 at the Hilton San Diego Mission Bay in San Diego California. The event is co-sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. 8. BREASTFEEDING LEGISLATION UPDATES
2006 has brought lots of proposed legislation regarding breastfeeding. Breastfeeding in public continues to stirs up debate, and those of you living in Arizona, Kansas, Mississippi and South Carolina may want to visit our Web site for updates. http://www.lalecheleague.org/Law/proposedsummary.html
We have also received information that breastfeeding in public legislation is being proposed in Great Britain. If you have legislative questions or are trying to get legislation passed, please contact LLLI, or Melissa Vance at firstname.lastname@example.org.
9. LLLI REPRESENTATION AD THE 2006 WORLD SOCIAL FORUM
Laurence Descourtieux, LLL Leader and resident of Caracas Venezuela, represented LLLI at the VI World Social Forum - II Social Forum that took place from January 24-29, in Caracas. Laurence joined representatives from other Latin American breastfeeding organizations to promote and support breastfeeding at the Forum. Forum delegates were invited to attend a breastfeeding roundtable, coordinated by Maria Lucia Futuro, member of the Amigas do Peito, a mother-to-mother support organization based in Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Materials on breastfeeding were passed out to delegates. Laurence and Maria Lucia Futuro were joined by IBFAN/Latin America and Leche y Miel (a Venezuelan breastfeeding organization) representatives and WABA provided partial funding. More information on this activity will be available shortly.
10. NEW PROJECT: TRANSLATION OF LLLI PUBLICATION: BREASTFEEDING ABSTRACTS (BA)
The translation to Spanish of Breastfeeding Abstracts is now possible with your contribution. Given the high rates of infant mortality in Central and South America, it is crucial to encourage and support breastfeeding education for health professionals. The translation of the BA into Spanish and its free distribution to hundreds of health care providers will be a powerful tool to improve breastfeeding practices and reduce infant mortality. The lack of adequate breastfeeding training in medical schools, the socioeconomic situation of the region and the predominate use of English in professional journals combine to prevent access by Spanish speaking health care providers to current breastfeeding resources. Additionally, the Spanish version will carry an editorial on regional aspects. For more information about the project visit: http://www.latchon.org/projects.htm?mode=view&rid=922 You can donate online. Thanks!
11. PLANNING A PARTY? NEED AN EXCUSE TO HOLD A PARTY?
Here a theme, there a theme! Still trying to come up with a theme for your House Party for the LLLI 50th Anniversary Fund? We've been checking the calendar as well, and here are some ideas!
Would you like to share how breastfeeding is environmentally friendly? Schedule a party around Earth Day in April? Mother's Day is coming up in May -- if Mom will be busy on her special day, how about celebrating all mothers at a tea the weekend before or after?
Here's a super idea -- hold a House Party on July 20th to begin the one year countdown to the BIG birthday celebration at the LLLI Conference in Chicago! Guests could donate a specific amount per day to the LLLI 50th Anniversary Fund.
What could be more natural than a House Party during World Breastfeeding Week in August? Or how about celebrating all of the grandparents with breastfeeding babies on Grandparent's Day in September.
And... stay tuned for special House Party information for LLLI's 50th Birthday on October 17th! Coordinate your party with all sorts of celebrations around the world.
For more information on House Parties, contact Meg Sondey, House Party Coordinator, at email@example.com or go to http://www.partyhostcenter.com/lalecheleague/ or http://www.lalecheleague.org for more information.
