*We have continued to improve our "one-stop breastfeeding information" page of breastfeeding resources, by adding links to articles from BREASTFEEDING ABSTRACTS and the Center for Breastfeeding Information's handy annotated breastfeeding bibliographies on relevant pages. Bookmark for your easy resource for breastfeeding help!

*The Center for Breastfeeding Information's breastfeeding paper of the month is "Repositioning Nutrition as Central to Development: A Strategy for Large-Scale Action" The summary is here:

*On our Center for Breastfeeding Resources additional information page is an updated PDF version of "Outcomes of Breastfeeding versus Formula Feeding," compiled by Ginna Wall and Jon Ahrendson, from the University of Washington Medical Center, updated March 2006.

*La Leche League issued a media release to mark World Health Day: "Working Together for Health: La Leche League International Marks World Health Day." You can read it here:

*We are in the process of substantially revising many of our Frequently Asked Question files. Extensive new content is available in the following new or revised files:

**First Foods for Babies
**When Should My Baby Start Solids?
**How Can I Become a La Leche League Leader?

*The LLLI Mother-to-Mother Support Forums, a bulletin board where mothers share breastfeeding and parenting experiences, has over 2,000 members now. Check it out to learn about mothers' concerns or to ask a question of your own.

*If you are looking for an LLL Group in your vicinity to attend, don't forget to visit our index of local LLL Group Web pages, or choose a country from our convenient drop-down menu listing all countries and regions with LLL sites. Three new US Groups have been listed in the past month, in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Washington, plus there are new beautiful new sites for LLL of Spain and Slovenia. Look for a new design on US Group Web pages in the coming weeks (see article #3 for a preview of the style)! To find all our Groups with Web pages, look at our collection:

LLLI is excited to announce that on or about April 24th our first LLLI branded product will be hitting the stores. Nordstrom will be carrying the LLLI licensed nursing bra as a test in several stores, mainly in the northwest U.S. To meet the needs of different shoppers they will be offering two styles of bras, a soft cup and under wire. We encourage you to visit Nordstrom Department stores and inquire about the nursing bra as well as recommend it to nursing mothers. Visit: for more information

The LLL in the USA Web site has been redesigned! We've created a new look and feel to capture the spirit of the wonderful work that Leaders are doing for mothers and babies in the US. Navigation of the site has been streamlined to guide users directly to the information they need. The site is divided into two sections: the public section is what visitors see when they type in the basic address (the home page). In that section of the site are links to finding a local Group, getting help with breastfeeding, and learning about activities in the US, such as conferences and World Breastfeeding Week. Links to Areas and Group pages from this portion of the site direct visitors to the public Area and Group pages. The password protected Leaders Only section of the site has all the Division, Area, and Group administrative files. It is accessed by logging in on the home page or going directly to (the user name and password have not changed). We hope visitors to the new LLL in the USA site will enjoy the new design and that US Leaders find that it makes their work easier.

In celebration of World Health Day, April 7, 2006, La Leche League International (LLLI) produced a document available in English and Spanish that demonstrates how LLLI, a mother-to-mother breastfeeding support organization, helps to build healthy communities and alleviate the growing worldwide shortage of healthcare workers. "Working Together for Health" is the theme of World Health Day 2006. By providing breastfeeding information and support, LLLI supports breastfeeding mothers and works with others involved in health services around the world. The LLLI World Health Day document is available for downloading and distribution in English at in Spanish at

Plan to celebrate the power of breastfeeding in Chicago, Illinois USA, at the La Leche League International Conference, July 10-23, 2007. The conference will be the culmination of a year's worth of events marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of LLLI in 1956. Attend the world's largest breastfeeding conference to earn Continuing Education Credits and hear the latest in evidence-based research on cutting-edge topics. One subject under consideration is the soon-to-be issued World Health Organization growth charts aimed at establishing the breastfed infant as the normative model for growth and development. Other topics may include medications in human milk, the perfect latch, co-sleeping and HIV and breastfeeding. The conference will be held at the Hilton Chicago, which is located on the "Cultural Michigan Avenue Mile" overlooking Grant Park and Lake Michigan, Millennium Park, and the Museum Campus. Be sure to save time before or after the meeting to experience all that the Windy City has to offer, including world-famous shopping and dining. Chicago boasts numerous parks, museums, and a beautiful lake front. It is a city known for fascinating architecture and neighborhoods. Breeze in for the Conference, stay for the sights.

Since 1956, over 40,000 Leaders have been accredited by La Leche League International, but only 20,000 are currently in the LLLI database.

With the approaching 50th anniversary, the Alumnae Association would like to locate and contact as many of these women as possible in order to reconnect them with La Leche League International and honor them for the significant role they have played in this organization's history.

Names of "lost" Leaders are gradually being added to a "Lost Leader" list as we are made aware of them. They are listed alphabetically, with last known city/state/country or location at the time of accreditation. In some cases, the accreditation year or the decade in which they were a Leader is also included. This information can be found at

If you have information on any of the Retired Leaders listed below (or if you find yourself on the list!), please contact Kathy Hays at FoundLeader at You can also fill out the form at

If you are looking for a former Leader/friend, you can post it on the Alum Page Bulletin Board at write the AAR for the appropriate Area. AARs can be found at

If you have experience in searching for people via the Internet, have an interest in searching for people in your town, region, state or country, or would like to help with this project in any other way, please contact Kathy Hays at FoundLeader at

"Don't buy flowers" this year! Instead, celebrate motherhood and honor a special woman in your life during the LLLI 2006 Mother's Day Appeal. To simplify your gift-giving, go to and make your donation today. La Leche League International depends on the generosity of those who know that contributions are essential to ensure that we can offer programs and services to mothers and babies around the world this year and in the years to come.

For the first time in 2006 La Leche League International has posted on internet an electronic version of the Spring Appeal Letter in Spanish. The slogan for the Spring Appeal is: "Bebe feliz, familia feliz: La diada madre-hijo, que se establece y refuerza con la lactancia, necesita del APOYO de la familia, así como también de la comunidad" (Happy Babies, Happy Families: the mother-baby union which is established through breastfeeding, needs the family's SUPPORT as well as the support from the community). LLLI has become increasingly aware of the need to provide breastfeeding services that are culturally appropriate and sensitive to the diversity of pregnant and breastfeeding Hispanic women.

If you would like to collaborate with the LLLI programs and services that benefit the Hispanic community, please visit this link:

Now you can raise money for La Leche League International just by searching the Internet at It's simple. You use like any other search engine — the site is powered by Yahoo! — but each time you do, money is generated for our organization to support more mothers and babies. Here's how it works:

1. Go to
2. Type La Leche League International into the "I support" box and click on "verify"
3. Search the Internet just like you would with any search engine
4. Since GoodSearch shares its advertising revenue with charities and schools, every time you search the Internet at GoodSearch, you'll be earning money for us.

GoodSearch also has a toolbar you can download from the homepage so that you can search right from the top of your browser.

Last year, search engines generated close to $6 billion in revenue from advertisers. When you switch to GoodSearch, part of this advertising revenue will now be directed to La Leche League International.

We hope that not only will you use GoodSearch as your main search engine from here on out, but will also pass this message on to your friends and family. The more people who use this tool, the more money will go to supporting mothers and babies around the world.

May makes many of us think of mothers. So what better time to have a House Party than May! And if you schedule your House Party on May 7th, you can participate in a conference call with founder Mary Ann Cahill. The 30 minute call will take place at (all times US):

5 pm Eastern DST
4 pm Central DST
3 pm Mountain DST
2 pm Pacific DST

Register your party at the 50th Anniversary Fund Party Central at:

We'll make certain that you have information on La Leche League for your guests and will send you complete directions on how to participate in our call.

And to make things easy on all mothers (or fathers or LLL friends!) consider having your House Party "off-site." Many small coffee shops or local restaurants would be thrilled to offer you a seating section or room for your party. You can often negotiate a group price for simple refreshments, or have the owner keep track of guests' spending during the party and then settle the bill at its conclusion (or the owners may even donate refreshment costs as their contribution to the event!). Local religious facilities or community centers often have gathering spaces that they are willing to share.

Consider a "come as you are potluck" where guests are encouraged to keep things simple! Just show up as you are dressed and bring a simple snack to share. The hostess provides the party space and everyone else helps with refreshments!

Aren't sure who to invite? What about an "everyone invites one" party? Each invited guest is instructed to bring a "surprise" guest with them -- you can suggest that it be a health care provider, retired Leader, or just someone who should learn more about LLLI and its mission! You can even make special "goodie bags" for the surprise guests containing LLLI and breastfeeding related information and items.

If you need more ideas or help planning your party, please contact Meg Sondey, House Party Coordinator, at
