1. NEW ON THE LLLI WEB SITE
The La Leche League Web site brings you breastfeeding information, news from LLLI and much more -- here's what we've added in the past month or so:
*The three lead articles from 2002 in BREASTFEEDING ABSTRACTS, LLLI's research-based publication are now available. The November 2002 article on sunlight deficiency and breastfeeding has been especially popular.
* Spanish speakers and those who help Spanish-speaking mothers with breastfeeding problems will be delighted to learn that we have added seven new LEAVEN translations from our most recent issue to our recently revised and revamped collection of Spanish breasfteeding information.
*After some technical difficulties, we were finally able to upload the PDF version of the 2003 LLLI Catalogue, in sections because it is a large file. If you would like a paper copy of the Catalogue, you can now get one this way. You can also always phone LLLI at 847-519-9585 and ask for a free copy to be mailed to you. The online Catalogue has also been completely revised.
*The Center for Breastfeeding Information has added to its additional materials collection links to condensed and full versions of Anne Altshuler's popular bibliography of children's books that feature breastfeeding. This list makes it easy to find books for your children with fellow nurslings in them. A new revised version is now available.
*We have added a list of companies that match funds when you make a contribution to La Leche League to our funding development pages. Please check the listing if you are interested in contributing to LLLI, as this will maximize the benefit to our organization! This mostly applies in the United States, but also in some other places.
*Links to many of our speakers have been added to the 2003 LLLI Conference Web pages, plus information on the VERY popular World Faire -- a conference favorite. Registration is going strong, so be sure to check it out! We are going to have FUN, meet wonderful new friends (and see old ones) and learn lots.
Note also that Linda Smith's conference session #113 - It Takes Two to Tango - How the Management of Birth Affects the Breastfeeding Dyad is listed in the Conference Registration booklet on p. 13. This session is a CE Basic session, but this information about CE did not appear in the Registration Booklet.
2. LLLI ONLINE MEETINGS HAVE A NEW LOOK
The LLLI Online Communications Department is happy to announce that our online meetings (chats) are now being held using new java-based software that is compatible with nearly every operating system and computer set-up. We are very grateful to Anne and Troy Easterday of Nebraska, USA and the Bellingham Breastfeeding Task Force in the state of Washington, USA for their generous donations that made the new software acquisition possible. Many thanks also go out to the LLL Leaders who worked so hard to learn the new system, set it up, and train others in its use.
Interested in checking our new chats out? You can meet breastfeeding mothers from many different places and share LLL information, even if you can't make it to a local Group meeting. Visit http://www.lalecheleague.org/chat/chat.html for a schedule of chats or to read about how they work.
LLL Leaders -- are you interested in leading online meetings? Contact the LLLI Website Team and we'll put you in touch with one of our chat coordinators!
3. REVISED LEADER'S HANDBOOK NOW SHIPPING
La Leche League International's valuable and useful Leader resource, THE LEADER'S HANDBOOK, has been substantially revised and is shipping now! Applicants and Leaders, be sure to order yours today! There is updated information on many topics, and a more international focus. Meeting plans have been formatted to fit on one page for ease of copying, too. Many Leaders around the world participated in the team that revised this resource, and they deserve our thanks and praise!
4. MATTHIEU CHAZELLE FUND
LLL Leaders: When you read in LEAVEN that the Matthieu Chazelle Fund helped 14 Leaders from around the world get to the 2001 LLL International Conference did you smile? Were you one of the many generous donors that helped provide lodging, food, or travel funds? If so, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
If you're wondering why these Leaders need help, one big problem is the difference in currencies. A bagel and coffee in a large U.S. city might cost $4; and in South Africa in might cost 4 Rand. Yet when a Leader from South Africa exchanges her Rand for dollars, it takes 11 Rand to make one dollar. That means that the coffee and bagel actually costs (in buying power in South Africa) the equivalent of $44 for U.S. Leaders!
Olga Morales, ACL for Mexico, reports that assistance from the Matthieu Chazelle Fund enabled LLL of Mexico to send six Leaders to the conference instead of their usual three Leaders.
Each of those six Leaders shared information in their Area Leaders' Letter from three or more sessions she attended. Some of the topics covered were Kangaroo Mother Care; Candidiasis; How Love Forms, Guides, and Alters a Child's Mind; and Challenging Breastfeeding Situations. The Leaders also shared the information with Leaders and members at their LLL of Mexico Conference last July.
Olga says that the difference between three Leaders attending and six Leaders attending is "greater than just three more Leaders." With each of those Leaders returning from the conference more knowledgeable, empowered, and full of enthusiasm, the enthusiasm and knowledge spread more effectively to the other 50+ Leaders in the country. It's like scattering seeds which grow into flowers and then drop more seeds of their own.
The conference made such an impact that ten Leaders immediately began saving monthly and searching for additional funding within their own communities to attend the San Francisco conference.
Remember that while many Leaders are attending the conference on scholarships, they still need some help with daily expenses. The next time you have a choice between cereal at home or a bagel and coffee on the run, have the cereal at home. Send the money you saved by not buying the bagel and coffee to "Matthieu Chazelle Fund," c/o Cecily Harkins, ID Treasurer, 4055 South West 48th Place, Portland, OR, 75221-3735 USA . You'll be making a difference!
5. EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES AT LLLI
La Leche League International has immediate job openings for a catalogue order taker and accounting clerk at the Schaumburg, Illinois, USA office. Information on what these positions entail and how to apply can be found here:
Please pass this information on to interested friends or family members.
6. COMING FROM LLLI PUBLICATIONS
We're in the process of producing three new tear-off sheets based on the latest information from the 2003 edition of the BREASTFEEDING ANSWER BOOK. One all-new sheet tells mothers some important things to consider when choosing a breast pump and another gives guidelines for applying and using a nipple shield. The third sheet gives brief summaries of the healthful effects of breastfeeding, with reference studies cited.
All three will be available soon.
