Appropriate Use of Group Funds

Andrea Eastman
Granville OH USA
From: LEAVEN, Vol. 38 No. 4, August-September 2002 p. 83.

Many Leaders want to know how they can use Group funds. Decisions about the use of Group funds are made jointly by all co-Leaders. Managing a Group’s funds is the responsibility of Leaders. It is important to remember that the money in the Group’s Treasury does not belong to the Leaders or members of the Group, it belongs to La Leche League. According to the LEADER'S HANDBOOK (1998), pages 152-53, “Group funds should be used for regular LLL activities that benefit mothers and babies….Money should be used to further LLL’s goals.” The LEADER'S HANDBOOK offers the following suggestions for the use of Group funds:

  • Books and pamphlets for the Group Library
  • Books and pamphlets for resale
  • Group supplies from La Leche League International (new mother cards,
  • Leader log sheets, etc.)
  • Other Group supplies (poster board, plastic for book covers, file cards, envelopes, etc.)
  • Postage
  • Telephone charges
  • Copy services
  • Registration fees for workshops and Conferences
  • Group affiliation fees
  • Leader dues

As listed, Group funds can be used for registration fees for Conferences and workshops. Setting aside money for Area fees and workshops is a practice that guarantees the money will be available when the time comes. A Leader is a representative of the Group and attending these events helps her fulfill her basic Leader responsibility to keep current on breastfeeding information. If funds allow, transportation and accommodations to these events can also be reimbursed with Group funds when all Leaders are in agreement. (See “Spending LLL Funds,” LEAVEN June-July 2002.)

Group members can be involved in choosing which LLL approved books the Group will purchase.

If your Group finds itself with extra funds, you may want to consider making a donation to LLLI or to another Group in your country or around the world. (For information on the Sister Group Program, see LEAVEN June-July 2002.)

Editor’s Note: Please check with your support person as procedures may differ in various LLL entities.
