How do you celebrate World Breastfeeding Week?
From: Leaven, Vol. 45 No. 1, 2009, p.16
Held the first week of August each year, World Breastfeeding Week is an opportunity to join over 120 countries in sharing and promoting the joys of breastfeeding. How do you celebrate World Breastfeeding Week? Last year, we at the La Leche League of Broomfield, Colorado, USA (formerly LLL of Lafayette) decided to host a charity walk. Over 100 people attended from all over the state—from parents and their little ones to grandparents and friends. In the end, we managed to raise over $1,000 (US).
More than just raising money, however, we made sure everyone had a great time. We posted factoids along the route that generated many interesting conversations. ("Did you know that breast milk contains stem cells?" "Did you know that adoptive moms have been able to lactate for an infant?") We also made sure to provide various activities for the children, including a station where, in keeping with the theme of Going for Gold, they could make their own gold medals.
Once the walk was over, we celebrated over an assortment of food and beverages and concluded by giving away prizes. Last year's walk was such a success that it bloomed into an annual event. We've planned more activities this year, all centered around the theme of Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life. We've also decided to host two walks, a 5K, which takes about an hour to complete, and a 2k, which should be more manageable for many children. Of course, those not wanting to walk are still encouraged to come and join in the festivities.
LLL of Broomfield's Second Annual World Breastfeeding Week Celebration will be held on August 1, 2009. We hope that you join the world in celebrating World Breastfeeding Week this year.

Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life
In support of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action's stand that breastfeeding is a vital emergency response, the theme for LLL in the USA 2009 World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations is Breastfeeding: Prepared for Life.
This theme recognizes the importance of supporting mothers with solid breastfeeding information so they can be successful at any time, especially in any emergency situation such as flooding, earthquakes or wild fires; or personal emergencies such as house fires, loss of a job; or public health emergencies like an epidemic.
