Imagination is Alive and Well

Imagination is alive and well in La Leche League! Whether organized by a lone Leader or many Groups working together, World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations (WBWC) provide the opportunity for creative events to publicize and normalize breastfeeding in the USA and around the world while raising funds to continue the mission of LLL. Take a peak at some of the ideas from WBWC 2007 showing the Power of One.

Partnering for Participation

LLL of Bristol (on the state line of Tennessee and Virginia, USA) partnered with the YMCA to host a baby fair and reached over 1,000 people in their community. They increased the outreach by decorating a 15-foot (4.5 m) downtown window with the advantages of breastfeeding and holding a five kilometer "Walk and Stroll." LLL of Page County and LLL of Front Royal, Virginia, USA had a potluck picnic for their members one weekend and held a sidewalk sale and bake sale in and outside of a fitness center the following weekend. LLL of Snohomish County, Washington, USA joined forces with WIC (Women, Infants, and Children program), the Department of Health, and their local breastfeeding coalition.

Dining for Dollars

LLL of Duncan, Oklahoma, USA, had a lasagna luncheon. LLL of East Islip, New York, USA asked all the mothers to bring a brunch dish to share along with their $5 (US) donation. Many brought their friends who are now Group members. What an innovative way to let mothers see what LLL is all about! LLL of Dunwoody, Georgia, USA, held an LLL day at a local restaurant, which donated 20 percent of their sales to the Group. LLL of Springfield, Missouri, USA and LLL of Topeka, Kansas, USA hosted an ice cream social.

Fun for Families

LLL of Algonquin, Illinois, USA had an open gym time at a local gymnasium. LLL of Osage County, Kansas, USA purchased games on sale, let the children in attendance play with them, and then auctioned the toys off, raising over $1,300 (US). LLL of South Cherokee, Georgia's event was a Family Fun Day with a prize walk (instead of a cake walk) for children. LLL of Baton Rouge #3, Louisiana, USA, held their event at an indoor inflatable funhouse. LLL of Elgin, Nebraska, USA held a Beautiful Baby Contest. LLL of Columbia, Maryland, USA, held two events -- an online auction and a picnic at a petting zoo that included a children's raffle. LLL of Marion County, Florida, USA fielded a major event with a symbolic walk, baby wearing expo, live music, free food, ongoing raffles, a silent auction, and a Leader available throughout the event for breastfeeding support. For the wee ones, there were clowns, bubbles, face painting, temporary tattoos, cookie decorating, jewelry making, games, and prizes.

The 2007 theme of the Power of One was apparent in the many activities. We hope you will host a WBWC event in 2008 by showing your community the importance of Mother Support: Going for the Gold. For ideas and the 2008 WBWC Kit, see www.lllusa.org/wbw or contact Linda at LPARRYLLL at aol dot com.
