Lone Leader? Small Town? Nancy Barry worked on the LLL of Idaho Falls, Idaho World Breastfeeding Week Celebration (WBWC) and single-handedly raised over $2,000 (US)! She picked a date, held the event at her home, wrote requests for donations, contacted businesses for donations for the Silent Auction, wrote the thank-you notes, counted the money, and took checks to the bank. "The best part was hearing from former members about how La Leche League benefited their daughters who are now having babies!" Lesson learned: call potential donors and ask for a donation rather than mailing a donation letter.
Nancy's hard work paid off in a big way! She's used her $500 first prize LLL educational scholarship to attend the 2007 LLLI Conference. Plus, her Group received an additional 10 percent rebate WBWC prize.
Forgot the checkbook? LLL of Shenango Valley, Pennsylvania, USA found the credit card/PayPal option useful. Group members got sponsors to raise money, $125 of which was donated by credit card. They celebrated with a walk and potluck.
LLL of Delta County, Michigan, USA raised over $1,000 with 72 attendees. Seven retired Leaders came to the Group's WBWC event. They were given special recognition and many friendships were rekindled. Three members won prizes and the Group raised enough money to receive a 6.5 percent Group rebate WBWC prize. The walk, lunch, games, and craft table were a major success. Businesses donated over $2,000 in products, which were used as prizes and for the silent auction.
LLL of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, USA hosted a party honoring Stacey Bentz's 10th anniversary as a Leader. They sent out invitations along with the adapted WBWC brochure from www.lllusa.org/wbw/kit.php to current and former members, and handed out flyers during meetings to encourage members to collect donations. In May 2007, LLL of Lawrenceville carried the LLL banner in the Lawrenceville Memorial Day Parade.
After their first meeting, LLL of Crosswicks, New Jersey, USA held a WBWC "Make-It Party/Lunch." Leader Colleen White also sent a letter to friends and family and received five donations. They raised enough to start their Group Library and buy tear-off sheets and other supplies for their new Group.
How can I plan a WBWC event?
Leader Molly Remer of LLL of Rolla, Missouri, USA states that without the WBWC Kit, she might not have hosted an event. But everything she needed and more was available for her to personalize and use. Why not do like Molly and host your own WBWC event? Planning timelines, ideas for fundraisers, quotes to use, and posters and forms are all at your fingertips at www.lllusa.org/wbw/kit.php.
Put dads to work: Seacoast Area LLL in Maine/New Hampshire, USA raised over $1,700 by combining events and putting dads to work. All totaled, 175 people came in contact with La Leche League at their WBWC event. BJ's wholesale club had a membership drive at their booth with a percentage going to the Group. Dads set up a yard sale. Each walker received a tote bag from Gypsy Mama, LLC. "We left the dads to run the yard sale and did our 1.5 mile walk through downtown Dover -- everyone carrying LLL balloons." Later they had a picnic. Seacoast Area LLL raised $1,286 in pledges for the walk, $234 at the yard sale, and $395 in donations from businesses. The Group received an eight percent WBWC rebate.
Use the Donor Incentive Flyer: Lissa Wells from Jersey City, New Jersey, USA raised $4,700 using the Donor Incentive Flyers found at www.lllusa.org/wbw/index.php. Nine of the businesses (banks, gyms, soccer clinics) and health care professionals (pediatricians and obstetricians/gynecologists) contacted by Lissa made donations ranging from $300 to $1,000! Ultimately, LLL of Jersey City's WBWC event raised the most money in 2006: $8,578, bringing the Area total up to $13,035.10!
