Nursing Her Baby

From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 24 No. 1, January-February 2007, p. 24

I'm the proud mom of a beautiful two-year-old girl, Abbey. I was extremely fortunate to have been able to exclusively nurse her for over six months and then continue to nurse her until she was 20 months old. She quickly learned the sign language sign for "nurse" and was often able to tell me when she needed to nurse. It was a wonderful bonding experience that I treasure to this day.

About a month ago, my friend and her six-month-old daughter came to stay with my family for the weekend. My friend nursed her daughter whenever the need arose, which often occurred near where Abbey was playing.

One evening that weekend I began to cook dinner and noticed that Abbey was as quiet as a mouse. I peered out of the kitchen into the family room to see what she was doing. It was a sight that warmed my heart. Abbey was pulling herself onto the couch. She then carefully placed the nursing pillow on top of her legs and positioned her "baby" toward her body. I asked her what she was doing and she informed me that she was nursing her baby!
