A Place I Call Home

Vera Lynn Richardson
Ohio USA
From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 25 No. 4, 2008, p. 27

In 1995, I got my first taste of La Leche League when I was pregnant with my second child. My roommate from college, Becky, gave me a copy of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding for my 28th birthday and I was hooked. I read it not just once, but twice that first week. I loved the mood and tone of the book. I loved the pictures, parenting style, and the mothers' stories. I was impressed with the seven Founders, too. I benefited from The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, but my second child, Zach, benefited more.

In 1996 I traveled 45 minutes away to my first La Leche League meeting, and I felt at home. They accepted me as I was and supported the mothers present as parents. I ended up attending meetings of two different LLL Groups for years.

In March 1999 I became an accredited LLL Leader. I felt I was giving back after so much had been given to me. What a joy! Now, over 10 years after my first LLL meeting, I have two teenage sons, I’m a lactation consultant, and I still lead LLL meetings. I am so glad that I get to help breastfeeding mothers, babies, and families.

LLL meetings are a place I still feel at home. If you have never attended an LLL meeting I invite you to come to one or two and see if LLL is for you, too.
