World Breastfeeding Week in 2008
From NEW BEGINNINGS, Vol. 25, No. 2, 2008, p. 31
Every year, 120 countries worldwide celebrate World Breastfeeding Week on August 1 through 8. The 2008 theme is Mother Support: Going for the Gold. Everybody wins when mothers breastfeed. Gold represents the best effort an individual or entity makes in supporting breastfeeding women. The word "gold" raises awareness of the superiority and the normalcy of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is the gold standard of infant feeding, against which all other feeding methods must be measured.
World Breastfeeding Week Celebrations (WBW) in the USA will be taking place from May through September. Some details for the 2008 WBWC in the US include:
- Prizes for individuals in the USA (subscriptions to Mothering Magazine, Amazon.com gift certificates, and educational scholarships)
- Group (US) rebates and random drawing prizes
- Between five and 15 percent of the money raised will be donated to support the LLL Breastfeeding Helpline in the US
- Grants: an additional five percent will be available to US Leaders in the form of grants that spread the LLL Mission
