Physicians from around the world will gather at La Leche League International's (LLLI's) 29th Annual Seminar for Physicians, co-sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) at the Hilton Chicago, July 5-7, 2001.
The distinguished experts will:
- critique the scientific merit of new research on SIDS and infant co-sleeping
- describe clinical issues related to contaminants in human milk
- compare maternal and infant weight patterns between breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding populations
- explore "kangaroo care"- skin-to-skin contact as a way to care for medically fragile babies
- address issues of clinical importance in regard to expressing, storing, and banking human milk
- discuss how maternal health problems can affect the success of breastfeeding
- provide information on evaluating breast masses in the lactating woman
- focus on issues unique to helping African-American women breastfeed their babies

Many health care providers regard LLLI's Physicians' Seminar as the premiere learning opportunity for breastfeeding information. The seminar provides continuing education credits for obstetricians, pediatricians, family physicians, osteopaths and lactation consultants. LLLI's Health Advisory Council, comprised of 44 physicians in the areas of pediatrics, obstetrics, allergy, nutrition, psychology, family practice and related fields, develop and contribute to the information presented. The annual event was originally launched by the Health Advisory Council to fill the need for educating their colleagues about breastfeeding.
