Well-known San Diego Physician Helps Celebrate New Professional Collection at La Leche League International

Schaumburg, IL (March 2002) Audrey Naylor, MD, DrPH, FAAP, co-founder of Wellstart International, a San Diego not-for-profit breastfeeding association that works with health care professionals to globally promote the importance of breastfeeding, participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the opening of La Leche League International's (LLLI) greatly enhanced collection of breastfeeding studies on Friday March 1, 2002.

Wellstart downsized its facilities in San Diego and offered LLLI their full collection of breastfeeding materials. This collection, established in 1977 includes 3,000 books and monographs and 19,000 research articles. LLLI is honored to accept this generous donation and is proud to permanently house this collection in the LLLI Center for Breastfeeding Information (CBI). The new materials combined with materials already available in our CBI result in a breastfeeding research collection unmatched by any medical or educational library in the world, containing some 38,000 studies and other scientific research materials.

The studies and research materials provide research information to health care providers, researchers, lactation consultants, La Leche League Leaders and others looking for information in well over 500 categories on a great number of topics related to breastfeeding. The categories span a huge array of topics from breastfeeding initiation to weaning, from lactoferrin to vegetarianism. With the average addition of almost 200 new articles a month, the CBI offers cutting-edge breastfeeding information.

In July 2000, the CBI database went online for the first time, allowing anyone with Internet access to tap into the database at no charge. The CBI website, www.lalecheleague.org/cbi/cbi.html, provides users with a service to assist them in obtaining bibliographic information about the breastfeeding studies available in our library.

The CBI also offers a subscribers' service that for an annual subscription fee offers among other things: quarterly mailings of a list of new study acquisitions; selected bibliographic lists of key research articles; a one-year subscription to Breastfeeding Abstracts, La Leche League International's premier publication for health care providers; a copy of Facts about Breastfeeding, our annual review of significant research articles; new pamphlets, flyers, position statements, and press releases from LLLI; five reprinted articles of your choice and access to LLLI's Center for Breastfeeding Information in our Schaumburg office.

Since 1956, La Leche League International has been providing breastfeeding assistance through mother-to-mother support, education and information.
